Jurassic World Review
Ok. The hype is nuts, the merchandising is crazy, the fans are in hysterics, and commercials are everywhere. The park is open and after going through the thrill ride that is Jurassic World... Was it all worth it? Yes! To an extent.
I'll be the first to admit that when I heard the news about yet ANOTHER Jurassic Park movie being made I was crestfallen. Seriously Hollywood? With all the powerful capabilities of filmmaking, why can't you can't invest in more ORIGINAL material? To which, the answer usually has to do with profits, marketing both at home and abroad, intellectual property rights and other bureaucratic red tape that usually is the death knell for any kind of creative ingenuity.
All in all, when I first heard about the movie I was slightly angered and relatively indifferent. Then the first teaser trailer came out. Let me tell you, I was ABSOLUTELY un-enthralled. I just sat in my seat and thought to myself. Hey look! It's a remake of the first film with just more people to kill on screen. What a crock of s@%!.
The only thing and I mean the ONLY thing that made me want to see this movie was Chris Pratt. I think he did a stellar job in the role of Peter Quill in Guardians and of Galaxy and I wanted some more of what he's been dishing up.
So me and my girlfriend went out opening night for the 7:30 showing of Jurassic World expecting to be underwhelmed. Heck, if the movie was bad then at least we'd have something we could make fun of and laugh at. For all intents and purposes the movie... Wasn't all that bad. It wasn't great but it was made well enough that I didn't feel like I had just watched a dinosaur take a giant dump all over the projector screen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film and would certainly recommend it to everyone out there for a fun mindless adventure. Yet, the filmmaker in me yells in frustration and dismay at what has been the fallout from this movie. It has now broken opening weekend box-office records and that's REALLY BAD NEWS.
Why is that bad news? Because it's sending a very BAD message to film production executives and producers out there. It's basically saying. "HEY! You wanna make money?! Then just rehash an old classic with worse CGI and even less character development and you'll make a fortune!"
Argh! You know what movie was a heck of a lot better than Jurassic World and only came out last month?! Mad (Freaking) Max! I'm so sick and tired of Hollywood pumping out movies nowadays that have less originality than vine videos.
That being said I do have to give some credit to Jurassic World because there were some creative moments, some decent jokes, and a lot of action that did get you sitting on the edge of your seat. To be clear. This movie was much better than "The Lost World" and "Jurassic Park III" combined. It is the only sequel to the original "Jurassic Park" that is actually worthy of being a sequel.
This review may seem like the babbling of a disenchanted, cynical moviegoer but I say these things because I believe filmmaking has more to offer than cheap thrills and unoriginal storytelling.
