Marven Conquest of Champions Review

marve hereos conquest.jpg

Have you seen the new MARVEL CONTEST OF CHAMKPIONS(MCC) I pad/google play game?

If not you seriously are missing out! It's an old style brawl game from the likes of Mortal Combat. Except it doesn't require a consul, controls, or a cartridge. However if you were missing the long list of combo lists to memorize for each individual character your out of luck with Contest of Champions. Instead of arduous preparation to play each match MCC has a unique way of making you feel like your playing one of those old style Fighting games without all of the extra requisites listed above.

PROS:

1: You don't feel like you have to pay for this Freemium game.

Marvel Contest of Champions is a free app created by KABAM available at the app store. For a freemium, it's actually well designed to give you a good playing experience whether your sitting down to play it for only 10 minutes, or in my case, 1 hour at a time. I have never had any other freemium game that has actually drawn me in like this one. Most freemium games get old after a point, and make you feel like you have to dump in hundreds of dollars to get ahead. In MCC they have a very good Match Making system when it comes to PvP content, and all of the daily quests have low curves with high rewards, meaning investing your money truly is optional. In the past KABAM's other games, such as Spirit Lords or Heroes of Camelot, have failed in this area. It's refreshing to find a freemium game whose energy and arena systems balance grinding and reward. The quality of KABAM seems to be improving, and I look forward to seeing more of their games published.

GREAT JOB KABAM!

2: Stellar graphics.

Again Kabam does a great job on delivering a very polished game with graphics on par with consul games that I have played in the past. Their Graphical user interface is quite stellar. It has these nice pop ups that remind tell you what you should be doing. It is a very well polished game, and it really makes me feel as if my favorite Super Heroes are dueling it out to the death. Well done! I also like the fact that they did not go the gory bloody route that they could of gone. I am very happy to see they stuck to the old super hero game themes!

3: Quick response times for finger swipes.

The combat system involves 5 common actions and one Special Attack action. The 5 common actions are Regular, Medium, and Heavy attacks for offensive actions. Dodge and block for defensive actions.

The Special attacks are initiated with a big button on the bottom left of the combat screen. The button turns Green (Stage one) Yellow (Stage two), and Red (Stage three) as your the energy bar grows. The energy bar grows when you are hit, or when you hit the other character.

It is very fast paced game play that makes you feel as if you are actually that Marvel Character, and it is well balanced due to the fact that when someone throws 3 Regular attacks and then mixes in a Heavy you could easy swipe to the left to Dodge that attack. Also, if you see that the other character is about to launch their special attack you could hold down on the left side to block. The left side of the screen does all of your defensive actions, and the right side does all of your offensive actions. These controls feel very intuitive, and for me it feels as if I already knew what to do whenever I entered the first tutorial.

So in summation the fighting system is not only laid out really well, it also has very quick response times where other games seem sometimes to fail.

CONS:

1: Character Balance:

You can organize the heroes two ways in MCC; by weight, or type. The weights are Light, Medium, and heavy. The Types are

contest_classes.jpg

The game will not tell you that there are three weight classes but for my own sake I put them in these classes.

Examples of each weight class.

juggernaut.jpg

Juggernaut attacks slow, but hits hard. His combo attacks seem to do more damage than the other two classes, but for being slow he also blocks slower, and dodges slower.

wolverine.jpg

Wolverine does moderate damage, and blocks and dodges at a pretty moderate speed. His special attacks reflect his weight class.

black widow.jpg

The light class attacks fast does good damage, and their “Break” attack when they break a block has a 4 hit combo that no other weight class does have.

My conclusion the LIGHT weight class is over powered compared to the others due to it's still moderately high damage, and 4 hit combo attack in regards to the other classes.

The Mutant type is also the most powerful because they have the unique ability of regeneration abilities that no other type does have.

So Balancing is an issue for MCC, but I think this is overcome by it's other strengths.

2.RNG

There is a large RNG element to the game. An individual in the forums posted recently that he had spent 200$ and not received a single 3* character, and to avoid the game. Also, to get a 4* it has taken players 3 days to 6 months to acquire one of these beauties!

So in MCC you get crystals, and for every crystal you get you have a chance to get a hero, or item or other such thing. Problem is you can't pick which you get. Which makes the RNG factor quite huge.

Conclusion.

So for MCC I have 3 PROS, and 2 CONS. However, I feel the pros outweigh the cons by a large margin. MCC is defiantly worth a play, and in my opinion is one of the more fun FREEMIUM games.

I think that KABAM still has it's work cut out for it in balancing the game and introducing some end game content, but in the interim I think that it is a fun game overall.
